Under the Gabled Green
A Primary Suite Retreat in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ
This full-gut renovation transformed an underwhelming primary suite into a richly layered sanctuary. The original bedroom ceiling, once flat and disproportionate to the scale of the room, was reimagined with a cathedral structure—elevating the volume and spirit of the space. We uncovered and utilized dead space above to craft a vaulted ceiling adorned with V-groove boards and exposed faux beams, lending a timeless architectural texture that feels both historic and grounded.
The adjoining layout was completely reconfigured to introduce a bespoke flex space—now serving as a serene home office, primary laundry, mudroom, and reading nook. Paneled white oak ceilings lend a quiet, rustic character, while herringbone brick floors anchor the space with warmth and utility. A concealed coffee station, seamlessly integrated into the millwork, adds a layer of thoughtful luxury to support daily rituals.
In the hallway, new espresso-toned white oak floors are bordered with a subtle pattern that echoes the overhead ceiling detail, reinforcing a sense of continuity and craftsmanship throughout.
The ensuite bath fulfills the client’s desire for a spa-like experience, with layered neutrals, natural stone, and fine textures that evoke calm without austerity. Every detail—from the fluted oak vanities to the handpicked drapery—contributes to an atmosphere of quiet luxury and livable refinement.
